About
Our Story
Founded in 1961, Yeshivat Sha’alvim began not just as a school, but as a military outpost—a sentinel in the Ayalon Valley. Following the 1967 Six-Day War, it transitioned into a Hesder Yeshiva, a pioneer in the movement that bridges intensive Torah scholarship with dedicated service to the Jewish people.
For over 35 years, the Moty Hornstein Institute for Overseas Students has invited young men from across the globe to step into this legacy, learning side-by-side with Israeli peers in an environment where Torah and Zionut are one and the same.
The Complete Ben Torah
At Sha’alvim, we don’t just educate the mind; we cultivate the soul. Our methodology is built on three pillars:
Textual Mastery: A rigorous focus on Gemara Iyun (conceptual depth) and Bekiyut (breadth).
Individualized Avodah: Recognizing that no two students are identical, we provide the personal attention needed for every student to find his unique derech (path).
Character Excellence: Through Va’adim and mussar, we emphasize middot and yirat Shamayim as the true measure of a Ben Torah.
More Than Just A Campus
Sha’alvim is situated in the serene Ayalon Valley, a location chosen for its ability to foster deep focus. Our students are integrated into the idealistic community of Nof Ayalon, where they are adopted by local families.
These relationships offer more than a home-cooked meal; they provide a living example of a life dedicated to Torah and the Land of Israel.
FAQs
What is the Hashkafa (Affiliation) of the Yeshiva?
Yeshivat Sha’alvim is a premier Hesder institution rooted in the ideals of Religious Zionism. We aim to cultivate a deep love for the Torah, the People, and the Land of Israel. Our calendar is marked by spirited tefillot and meaningful tiyulim on Yom HaAtzmaut and Yom Yerushalayim. We prepare our students to continue their journey in university or professional life as dedicated Bnei Torah committed to mitzvot and yirat shamayim.
How accessible are the Rabbeim?
The warmth of Sha’alvim is legendary. Most of our faculty live on campus, meaning their homes are an extension of the Beit Midrash. Students view their Rebbe as both a high-level teacher and a lifelong spiritual guide. These bonds don’t end at graduation; it is common for a first or second-year Rebbe to serve as the Mesader Kidushin for his students years down the line.
Do Overseas students integrate with the Israeli program?
We offer a “best of both worlds” approach. While overseas students have a tailored curriculum to maximize their growth, they share the Beit Midrash, cafeteria, and more with Israeli Hesder students. For those seeking deeper immersion, we offer weekly chavrutot with Israelis and the option to join Israeli shiurim. Many of the overseas students cite their desire to be part of an Israeli Yeshiva as one of the reasons they came to Sha’alvim.
What's the food like?
Three meals a day are served in the cafeteria. Breakfast and dinner are dairy meals, while lunch is a Meat meal. Food can also be purchased at the local makolet, which is located on campus, and stocks many American items. The makolet is open every day from 8:00AM to about 8:30PM
How are the dorm rooms?
How far is it to Yerushalayim?
What do the guys do when they're not learning?
There are many scheduled activities organized by the yeshiva for the overseas students outside of the regular studies (see next question). Sha’alvim has a sports complex, which includes basketball courts, a soccer field, tennis courts and track. In addition to playing sports and exercising, students spend leisure time talking to friends and relaxing.
Are there any organized activities besides learning?
Yes. There are many tiyulim and Shabbatonim scheduled throughout the year. These trips are planned both for their educational value, including organized historically-significant outings called Tanach Trails, and with the intent that students enjoy themselves and come to learn about and appreciate Eretz Yisrael. Many students also participate in the annual Yeshiva mission to Poland .
Can you tell me about your graduates?
Every year, Sha’alvim is very proud of its graduates. The students leave with refined middot, a passion for learning Torah, and invigorated with a sense of responsibility for klal yisrael. Sha’alvim is proud to report that many of our recent graduates have been recognized for these fine qualities. The highly competitive “masmidim” program at Yeshiva University, which includes a full tuition scholarship and leadership training, accepted more graduates of Sha’alvim than from any other institution. Similarly, Sha’alvim graduates comprise the largest contingency from a single yeshiva in the prestigious Kollel Elyon. As future professionals, businessmen, pulpit Rabbis and Roshei Yeshiva, Yeshivat Sha’alvim is training tomorrow’s leaders.
How do I know if Sha'alvim is right for me?
Discuss with your current Rebbeim, teachers, and mentors, Shaalvim Alumni, explore the rest of the site, and then most importantly, talk to some of our former students who know you, and who can help you decide if Sha’alvim offers a program that suits your needs, and if you’re ready for what Sha’alvim offers. If you have any further questions please feel free to contact our office for further guidance.
How do I apply to Sha'alvim?
Our online application can be found here. If you are attending a Yeshiva High School, you should talk to your Rebbe or Israel guidance counselor. They are in contact with us and coordinate when interviews will occur.
